HVAC Technician Tool Kit: What You Need on Day One

HVAC is one of the most technically demanding trades — you're working across refrigeration, electrical, gas, and ductwork on every job. Electrical Diagnostics

Digital Multimeter (True RMS)

Tests voltage, amperage, resistance, and capacitance. True RMS is required for accurate readings on variable-speed systems — standard meters lie on these circuits.

Clamp Meter

Measures compressor amp draw and fan motor current without breaking the circuit. Essential for diagnosing hard starts and overloads.

Capacitor Tester

Tests run and start capacitors without removing wires. Bad capacitors are one of the most common HVAC failures — you'll test dozens per season.

Non-Contact Voltage Tester

Quick check for live circuits before servicing. Use this before opening any disconnect or panel — always.

Infrared Thermometer

Measures surface temperatures from a distance. Used to check supply air temps, motor heat, and heat exchanger hot spots.

Psychrometer

Measures wet-bulb and dry-bulb temperatures for humidity calculations and superheat/subcooling verification.

Refrigerant Piping & Tubing

Refrigerant lines are copper tubing that must be cut, flared, and brazed correctly. A bad flare or a contaminated system can destroy a compressor.

Tube Cutter (1/8"–1-1/8")

Clean, square cuts on copper refrigerant lines. A clean cut is the first step to a leak-free flare or braze.

Mini Tube Cutter

For tight spaces near coils and line sets where a standard cutter won't fit.

45° Flaring Tool Set

Creates the flared connection that seals refrigerant line fittings. A proper 45° flare is required — too shallow or uneven and you get a refrigerant leak.

Swaging Tool Set

Measures air velocity at registers and grilles. Used to calculate CFM and verify system airflow meets design specs.

Manometer (Dual Port)

Measures static pressure in duct systems. Diagnoses undersized ductwork, dirty filters, and restricted airflow.

Duct Knife

Serrated blade cuts fiberglass ductboard cleanly without fraying the insulation.

Sheet Metal Snips (Set of 3)

Left, right, and straight cut for fabricating ductwork and cutting sheet metal. Aviation-style snips are stronger than scissors-style.
