Plumber Apprentice Tool Guide

Essential Plumbing Tools for New Apprentices

Plumbing apprenticeships open the door to one of the most stable and consistently well-paying trades. Every building needs water in and waste out — that demand doesn't slow down. But showing up to your first day without the right tools puts you behind immediately. This guide walks through every tool a plumbing apprentice needs, organized by the type of work you'll do. We explain what each tool does and why experienced plumbers won't work without it.

Pro Tip

RIDGID dominates plumbing tools for a reason — their pipe wrenches and augers are what professional plumbers actually use on the job. Don't start with knock-off brands on safety-critical tools like torch kits and augers.

Pipe Wrenches — The Plumber's Signature Tool

If there's one tool that defines the trade, it's the pipe wrench. You'll own multiple sizes and reach for them constantly.

Pipe Wrench (14")
Standard grip for threaded pipe up to 1.5". Cast iron jaw with replaceable hook and heel jaws. RIDGID's 31110 is the gold standard.
Pipe Wrench (10")
Compact version for tight spaces under sinks and in mechanical rooms. You need both sizes — one holds, one turns.
Basin Wrench
The only tool that reaches behind sinks to tighten faucet mounting nuts without removing the sink. Telescoping handle adds reach.
Adjustable Wrench (10")
For compression fittings, supply line nuts, and valves where a pipe wrench would damage the finish.
Strap Wrench
Grips polished chrome and PVC without scratching. Essential when working on visible fixtures.

Cutting & Joining

Modern plumbing uses copper, PEX, PVC, and CPVC. Each material has its own cutting and joining method — you need tools for all of them.

Copper Tube Cutter (1/8"–1")
Makes clean, square cuts on copper tubing. A clean cut makes a better solder joint. Spare cutting wheel included.
PVC Ratchet Cutter
One-hand cuts on PVC and CPVC up to 1-5/8". Much cleaner than sawing. Ratchet action makes it easy with one hand.
Mini Tube Cutter
Cuts copper in spaces too tight for the standard cutter — between studs, in cramped mechanical rooms.
Propane Torch Kit
Self-igniting torch for soldering copper fittings. Lead-free solder and proper flux technique are required by code.
PEX Crimping Tool
Crimps 1/2" and 3/4" PEX rings for PEX-A and PEX-B connections. Go/no-go gauge verifies every crimp.
Deburring Tool
Removes burrs from cut pipe ends. Burrs cause leaks and turbulence — never skip deburring.

Drain & Waste Tools

Drain work is where apprentices spend a lot of time. Clogs, rough-in, and fixture installation all require these tools.

Closet Auger (6ft)
Clears toilet clogs without scratching porcelain. The vinyl guard is essential — using the wrong tool on a toilet destroys it.
Drain Snake (25ft)
Hand-crank cable for sink and tub drain clogs. 1/4" cable handles 99% of residential drain work.
Force Cup Plunger
Heavy rubber cup creates proper seal on toilets. Flat plungers are for sinks — the force cup is the toilet plunger.
Inspection Mirror
Telescoping handle with LED. See behind pipes and under fixtures to find leaks, corrosion, and improper installation.

Measurement & Layout

Proper layout prevents callbacks. Drain pitch, fixture heights, and rough-in dimensions are all code-specified.

Tape Measure (25ft)
Measures rough-in dimensions for fixtures, pipe run distances, and clearance requirements.
Torpedo Level (9")
Magnetic. Checks drain pitch — drain lines require 1/4" drop per foot of horizontal run by code.
Pipe Marker Kit
Color-coded markers for hot, cold, and waste lines per ASME A13.1. Required in commercial work.
🦺

Materials & Safety

Plumbing uses specific consumables for code-compliant connections. Don't substitute.

PTFE Thread Seal Tape
5 rolls. Wraps threaded fittings before assembly. Always wrap in the direction of the thread.
Pipe Joint Compound
Brush-top can. Seals threaded joints on gas and water lines where tape alone isn't enough.
Lead-Free Solder & Flux
Lead-free solder has been required by law in potable water systems since 1986. Water-soluble flux per ASTM B813.
Safety Glasses
Flying solder, flux splash, and pipe chips are constant hazards. ANSI Z87.1 rated.
Heavy-Duty Tool Bag (20")
24 pockets, waterproof base. Plumbing tools are heavy — you need a bag that holds up.

Everything in this guide, hand-selected and organized by trade. One order, 28 professional-grade tools, ships direct to you.

Bottom line. Plumbing apprenticeships run 4–5 years and cover residential service, new construction, and commercial work. The tools above handle copper, PEX, PVC, and drain work — the full range of what you'll encounter. Good tool habits from day one (clean cuts, deburring, proper pitch on drains) are what separate plumbers who get callbacks from those who don't.
